HVAC & Plumbing: Complete List of Heating Pipe Fittings
Choose the right fittings! PPR pipes are heat-resistant and pressure-resistant, aluminum-plastic pipes are oxygen-resistant and easy to bend, brass valves are rust-proof and highly sealed, thermostats are precise and energy-saving, safety valves are essential explosion-proof pipes. Avoid inferior parts and extend system life by 50 years
Heating Pipe Fittings in Plumbing
PPR pipes (random copolymer polypropylene) : The most mainstream choice at present. High heat resistance (up to 110 ° C for a short time at 95 ° C), pressure resistance, corrosion resistance, no interface hazard in hot-melt connection, good insulation, moderate price, long service life (theoretical value of 50 years). Recommended for use.
Aluminum-plastic composite pipe: Pressure-resistant, heat-resistant, good oxygen permeability resistance, no rebound when bent, easy to connect (clamping or sliding type). But the cost of the joints is slightly higher and the installation requirements are strict. Recommended for use (especially in exposed installations or where bending is required).
PB pipe (polybutylene pipe) : Excellent performance (better than PPR in flexibility, heat and pressure resistance, impact resistance, and insulation), but expensive, with a lower market share.
Galvanized steel pipe: Traditional material, high strength, high heat resistance. But not recommended for newly installed systems: prone to rust, corrosion and scaling (reducing flow, polluting the system), complex installation (requiring threading or welding), poor insulation, relatively short lifespan.
Stainless steel: Extremely strong, corrosion-resistant, hygienic, extremely long service life. But they are expensive, have special connections (crimping, welding), and are mainly used in high-end or special demand situations.
Function: A channel for transporting hot water or steam, the main trunk and branch of the system.
Valves (for flow control, opening and closing, regulation, safety)
1. Stop valves/gate valves
Valve body/cover: brass (mainstream, good corrosion resistance), cast iron (cheap but prone to rust, not recommended for home use), stainless steel (high-end, excellent corrosion resistance).
Valve stem: Stainless steel (rust-resistant).
Sealing material: High-quality rubber or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
Function: Primarily used to cut off or connect the medium (water/steam) in the pipeline. The regulating performance of the stop valve is slightly better than that of the gate valve, but the resistance is slightly greater; A gate valve has less resistance when fully open. Stop valves are commonly used in heating systems.
2. Ball valve
Valve body/Cover: Brass (most commonly used), stainless steel (high-end, corrosion-resistant).
Ball: chrome-plated brass, stainless steel.
Valve stem: Stainless steel.
Seal: PTFE.
Function: Quick opening and closing by rotating a 90-degree sphere. Easy to operate, quick on/off, low resistance, good sealing. It is perfect as a switch control valve for radiators or pipe sections.
Thermostatic valve (thermostatic valve)
Valve body: brass (mainstream), stainless steel.
Valve core: Quality engineering plastic, stainless steel.
Temperature sensing element: paraffin or special liquid.
Function: Installed at the water inlet of the radiator, automatically regulates the flow of water into the radiator to precisely control the room temperature. After the user sets the target temperature, the temperature-sensing element inside the valve head automatically expands/contracts according to room temperature, driving the valve core to open and close. A key accessory for energy efficiency and comfort.
Balance valve (static/dynamic)
Valve body: Brass, cast iron (large main pipe), stainless steel.
Valve core/measuring element: stainless steel, engineering plastic.
Function: Regulate the hydraulic balance of the system, ensure that each loop or each radiator gets the designed flow, and solve the problem of near hot and far cold. The static balance valve requires manual measurement and debugging; Dynamic balance valves (self-operated differential pressure/flow control valves) can automatically adapt to changes in system pressure to maintain the set flow.
Safety valve/relief valve
Valve body: Brass, stainless steel.
Spring: Stainless steel.
Function: Install in critical positions such as the highest point of a boiler or system. When the system pressure exceeds the set value, it automatically opens for pressure relief to prevent overpressure from causing equipment damage or safety accidents. It is an essential safety device.
Automatic exhaust valve
Valve body: Brass (mainstream), stainless steel, plastic (low-end, use with caution).
Float/Seal: stainless steel, premium rubber/plastic.
Function: Install at the highest point of the system or where air is likely to accumulate. Automatically expel the accumulated air in the pipes to prevent air blockage from affecting circulation and heat dissipation. Ensure the system is functioning properly.
This comprehensive guide covers the most common fittings in a heating piping system. In practical applications, select and purchase under the guidance of a professional based on your specific system type (central heating/independent heating/underfloor heating/radiator), design drawings, budget, and local market availability.
